Troubling Scripture

Scripture is not straight forward. There is an awful lot within its pages that should trouble us, if we are reading it sincerely and carefully. Misogyny, violence, slavery, terrible sadness - what do we do with these things?

We need to trouble scripture: we should ask searching questions of the interpretations that have been handed down, looking for strengths and challenges, but also wondering if there are other ways of reading and understanding these passages. Perhaps there is truth to be found in the tension.

The Book of Judges contains multiple fleshed out female characters: leaders, warriors, wisdom-keepers. The honouring or dishonouring of women in the book is a spiritual barometer for the nation of Israel. It has much wisdom and challenge to offer us today.
