It feels like everyday there is a new catastrophe, a fresh indignity, more crisis and conflict on the global scene and in our domestic political, social and religious environments.
Some perspective is helpful. None of this is new. It is in our faces a lot more than it has been in the past - thanks to the vast and intimate reach of social media - but political tyranny, assassinations, predictions of rapture, ethnic cleansing, hatred of the Other, religious profiteers, lack of hospitality, economic downturns, racism, etc..., the world has known of these things for as long as humans have tried to organize themselves.
Frankly, and sorrowfully, it must be confessed that much evil has been done in the name of Jesus throughout human history. And it continues today.
The current state of much of the religious conflict, confusion, and chicanery can be traced back to a version of Jesus that fit the needs of colonialism. The story and person of Jesus has been repeatedly used and abused by Empires to justify the naked theft of land, resource, and even human beings. The promise was the gift of civilisation, the gift of salvation, and all that was asked for in return (well, not asked), was total submission to the superiority of the colonizers.
Jesus wept.
